The dust has settled on the London Summer Turf Games, and Team DLPT delivered exactly what was promised.
We sent a massive squad of 23 athletes, split across five teams based at Bishop's Stortford's Koru Gym and Woodside gym—down to Grasshoppers Rugby Football Club. They stepped into the arena alongside roughly 5,600 other competitors to test the limits of their physical and mental endurance.
The environment was unforgiving. Add the blistering 31°C heat to the sheer volume of the workouts, and the conditions became a true test of grit. When asked in our post-comp survey to sum up the day in three words, the squad did not hesitate: "Hot", "Epic", and "Inspiring".

The Workouts: No Place to Hide
The Turf Games format is designed to expose any weakness in your programming. As Danny explained to the Bishop's Stortford Independent, the day was broken down into four gruelling tests:
- The Strength Event: A brutal ladder involving barbells, cleans, overhead presses, and thrusters for maximum weight.
- The Cardio Workout: A lung-busting combination of running and cardio ergs to measure pure work output.
- The Worm: The infamous three- or four-person giant sandbag. This is never just a test of raw strength; it is a profound test of communication, synchronisation, and teamwork under severe fatigue.
- The Metcon: A punishing nine-round gauntlet featuring advanced gymnastic elements like rope climbs and toes-to-bar.
The Execution and The Results
Every single team held the standard and left nothing in the tank. The leaderboards proved that the intense preparation paid off:
- Men’s Intermediate Teams (Captains Jack Wilkinson and Dave Croxford): Threw down a mammoth effort, finishing 12th and 22nd out of a highly competitive field of 72 teams.
- Everyday Women’s Team (Captain Steph Helps): Smashed their category, claiming an incredible 17th place against 159 other teams.
- Intermediate Women’s Team (Captain Chloe Barclay): Proved their resilience, taking 64th out of 120 teams.
- Pure Cardio/Engine Team: Lorraine Booker, Carly Richards, and Kaitee Kristensen tackled the relentless cardio division with incredible determination.
The day was also filled with massive individual breakthroughs. Standout performances included Jack Wilkinson stepping up and hitting a massive 100kg thruster, a huge compound movement testing his absolute strength and power. Amber Prince also locked out a brilliant personal best with a 55kg clean and push press.
Massive respect is also due to athletes like Adam Bond, Craig Snelling, and Samantha Abbott, who stepped up to the intermediate category for their very first team competition and completely held their own.
Making Headlines: The DLPT Standard
The squad's performance caught the attention of the Bishop's Stortford Independent, who featured the team's achievements. Speaking to the paper, Danny summed up the philosophy perfectly:
"The results were fantastic, but what made me the proudest was seeing all of these people overcome balancing their full-time jobs, families and injuries to get through all of the training and achieve things they never thought possible. People from all walks of life representing Bishop's Stortford, pushing themselves way outside of their comfort zones and supporting one another throughout the whole day."
The Reality of the Arena: Brotherhood and Burpees
You do not survive the "gas station" workout or move a massive 4-person worm in extreme heat by yourself. You do it because of the people standing next to you.
The athletes highlighted that the absolute best part of the day was the community culture, noting the unmatched team vibe and the feeling that everyone had each other's backs. As one athlete put it perfectly: "You don’t need to be the fittest person in the room, you just need to be willing to work together... play to each other’s strengths, and support one another."
The Next Target
The hay is in the barn for Summer Turf, but the grind does not stop. All of the 23 athletes have explicitly confirmed they are signing up for the next competition.
The crosshairs are now locked on the upcoming Farm Games, Hyrox, and Winter Turf. Athletes are already analysing their performances, specifically aiming to dial in skills like Toes-to-Bar and heavy lifting over the next few months to ensure they return even stronger.
For anyone sitting on the fence about stepping onto the competition floor, the squad’s advice is simple and direct: "Bite the bullet and do it!" and "Do it! Nothing grows in comfort zones."
The hardest part is walking through the door. After that, we go to work.

Amber Prince
Sum up your competition day in three words. Electric, Hot and Inspiring
What was your favourite moment from the event? Managing to hit a PB and hearing the support from everyone (my team and the other teams). What a community DLPT is 💪🏻
What was the most brutal moment on the arena floor, and how did the team pull you through it? I think the heat was the hardest part, as not being able to train in those conditions. However, as a team each member took ownership of each event to help get through it for exampls: I was in charge of one london and making sure each member knew when to run. Jo was in charge od the last one (Esther) to make sure everyone got to the right erg equipment
How did the squad hold up under the 4-person worm when the fatigue set in? We had the 3 person worm but the fatigue still set in with the burpees, so it was making sure with the runs they would run first to have more rest and switching out people to give enough rest
What are you most proud of from your overall performance? Finishing in the top 20 teams of 160 is such an achievement for my first all girls team. Which the woman on my team were amazing and so motivational for every event
How did the reality of the competition floor compare to the dark places you went during the training block? As a team on the actual day we did much better than we did in training as I dont think you can prepare for the actual day when adrenaline is pumping and competitive nature's surface. However, the fear for the worm still sunk in for me on the day but changing the run from 400m to 200m really helped!
What made competing as part of a DLPT team special? The atmosphere from everyone in this community was amazing whether it was members competing or members spectating that felt very special to have. The vibes started on the coach and kept going throughout the day. It was a privilege to be asked to be part of this event and be put into an amazing team
What advice would you give someone sitting on the fence about their first team competition? Just do it! It will be nerve wrecking but the feeling you have once it is done is amazing and such a great atmosphere which is hard to explain
The hay is in the barn for Summer Turf. What is the next target in your crosshairs? Training for farm games
Finish this sentence: "If you're thinking about signing up for something that scares you, ____." this is your sign. The hardest part is saying yes after that, you just keep showing up

Sum up your competition day in three words. The Engine Winners 😂 Or Adrenaline. Chase. Win
What was your favourite moment from the event? Pushing each other when it got tough and know we never gave up.
What was the most brutal moment on the arena floor, and how did the team pull you through it? It hit me harder than I expected! My body wanted to stop and thinking of the different combination went out the window when we were that tired. The German umpire lady and her mate sitting on our worm whilst we struggled to count 😂! Got Che to do it all himself.
How did the squad hold up under the 4-person worm when the fatigue set in? Heavy, awkward, and relentless.
What are you most proud of from your overall performance? Committing to the training for the last 6-9 months and feeling a lot stronger than I did in the winter turf.
How did the reality of the competition floor compare to the dark places you went during the training block? A lot more comfortable know we had trained hard and worked with Danny to prepared for the event and each individual work out.
What made competing as part of a DLPT team special? Competing as a team is so much more enjoyable than going solo. Knowing everyone is counting on each other gives you that extra push, you dig a little deeper because you don’t want to let your teammates down. The shared effort makes crossing the finish line even more rewarding.
What advice would you give someone sitting on the fence about their first team competition? Go for it. You don’t need to be the fittest person in the room, you just need to be willing to work together. Train as a team, communicate during the race, play to each other’s strengths, and support one another when it gets tough. The teamwork makes the challenge far more enjoyable, and crossing the finish line together is a feeling you’ll never forget
The hay is in the barn for Summer Turf. What is the next target in your crosshairs? Hyrox
Finish this sentence: "If you're thinking about signing up for something that scares you, ____." do it anyway. Growth happens outside your comfort zone, and you’ll be amazed at what you’re capable of.

What was the most brutal moment on the arena floor, and how did the team pull you through it?
